Flight18

Experiential Environment Design

Flight18 (conceived and directed by Eric Wallach, produced at 3LD) was an immersive spaceflight performance in which the audience became the passengers of a dance party cruise through the Solar System. The performance area was surrounded by seven large video screens - the windows of the ship - that showed lift-off from New York City, then the planets, stars, and asteroids whizzing by throughout the flight.

The experiential video and sound environment was created in Unity3D and used an easy-to-learn iPad app that gave anyone control to fly the ship anywhere in the Solar System. Audience members were given the controller and asked to explore the planets, encouraging consensus and connection among the members of the shared experience.

After the show closed, the technology was developed further during an Artist Residency at Harvestworks.
